The task of each ASO specialist is to select the most popular and relevant queries for their application. To measure the popularity of a query, we use Daily Impressions, an algorithm that shows the number of impressions for each query per day.

We have always sought to make the most accurate algorithm on the market so that your apps get more organic installs. Step by step, we refine the algorithm, taking into account changes in app stores and more detailed data such as smartphone penetration in different countries.

This week, ASOdesk launched a major update of the Daily Impressions algorithm for the App Store and Google Play. This is the biggest change since the first algorithm.

The previous version took into account search suggestions, anonymized data on installs from the search, developer consoles, and much more. The updated version has become even more accurate and now takes into account data on active devices, population, and the usage share of operating systems in each country.

Many users have noticed quite significant changes in the frequency score. For some queries, the popularity score decreased, while for others, on the contrary, it increased. In this article, we will explain why this happened and demonstrate the accuracy of the algorithm using examples of search queries that were sent to the technical support chat.

“Handy signatur app” query,  Austria

Daily Impressions Google Play = 333
Daily Impressions App Store = 190
Apple Search Ads Popularity = 71

We can see that the query’s popularity score according to Apple Search Ads is quite high — 71 out of 100. It’s important to understand if Daily Impressions on the App Store are accurate, as 190 is a very small number.

To answer this question, we need to collect some data about the country, such as:

Population of Austria = 8,935,112
Smartphone penetration rate = 87.3%
Share of iOS devices = 36.3%

Additionally, we need to compare the data about Austria with any other country. Let’s take comparable data about the United States:

Population of the United States = 326,474,000
Smartphone penetration rate = 72.7%
Share of iOS devices = 61.07%

Let’s check a query similar to “handy signatur app” by Apple Search Ads Popularity, for example, “Instagram followers”:

Apple Search Ads Popularity = 69
Daily Impressions App Store = 9163

The US population using iOS devices is approximately 50 times greater than in Austria. We take the population of a country and multiply it by the percentage of smartphone penetration and the share of iOS devices.

For us, this means that similar Apple Search Ads Popularity queries for the US and Austria should differ by about 50 times according to Daily Impressions App Store. This is what we see: 9163 for the USA versus 190 for Austria.

This means that Daily Impressions of 190 for the query “handy signatur app” in the App Store in Austria is accurate.

Let’s check the accuracy of the values for Google Play. For this, it is important to know the percentage of Android devices in the country. The share of iOS is 36.3%, which means that there should be 1.75 times more active Android devices. This corresponds to the Daily Impressions Google Play value of 333.

“Pump it up” query, USA

Let’s consider another query example for which there were noticeable changes in the popularity score. This time, we don’t need to draw comparisons between multiple countries. It will be enough to rely on the Apple Search Ads Popularity indicator, as well as on the share of iOS devices.

Apple Search Ads Popularity = 7
Daily Impressions App Store = 43
Daily Impressions Google Play = 27
Share of iOS devices in the USA = 61.07%

This is a low-frequency query because it has an extremely low ASA Popularity. Taking into account the share of iOS devices in the country, Daily Impressions on the App Store and Google Play may differ by 1.5 times. This is what we see in the example.

We made sure that the changes in the Daily Impressions algorithm will have the best impact on your ASO and give you the most accurate data on the queries’ popularity score in the App Store and Google Play.

Our team will continue to improve ASOdesk algorithms and tools. We would be happy to answer your questions and help you figure out how the algorithm works. Send your questions to hello@asodesk.com or use chat support in your account.

P.S. Data about the countries, such as population, percentage of smartphone penetration, and the share of iOS devices, can always be found in official reports and resources from Statista, Statcounter, and Hootsuite.
